Number Hell

Anyone who knows me vaguely well will know that I have a serious problem with retaining numbers, in the short term, in my head. What I think is called my "scratch pad" memory fails me terribly. So telephone numbers, dates of birth, currency exchanges etc so easily make me look dumb as I stare blankly at the people trying to share the numbers with me. My friends and colleagues have always been very patient with me while I find a pen to write the numbers down. And even then, they only give me two at a time. A recent number analysis test I had to go through as part of a recent interview placed my mathematical analysis capability in the top 10% of post grads. Ask me to remember 462, and I can't do it. So, two huge jobs on the island that needed doing were the teleport info boards and the tour. They've been staring at me for weeks now. Oh all those coordinates! Those numbers staring at me, confusing me, making me panic. Silly really. But they do. Quite an easy job for people who can move numbers easily from the top of the screen to a script but I knew it was going to take me ages to get them transferred from one place to the other. Fortunately, a poking finger in my virtual side and the offer of help from Himmm has meant that now the tour is finished and the teleport boards are nearly done. I thought for the future I could train Himmm up so I don’t have to do the job at all. Hey, great - see, I can always get around my number problem!

Good news on the fairy front. They've had two good comments and no negatives so far. Things are looking hopeful for them.

Fairy Dust

Some months ago I bought a Fairy Hive - I say bought, it was free from slexchange. When touched, this magical little object throws out a tiny fairy that flutters and puffs around. She likes to stay near her hive and close to her other fairy friends. However, if a visitor is nearby, she may wonder off to see them; a trail of fairy dust following her. Never intrusive or pushy but shy and reticent, the presence of the fairies on the island has only added to its charm. I have really tried not to like them. Silly little things. In fact the command "kill fairies" which instantly kills them all and sees them fluttering to the floor and disappearing, has been used several times. It's never too long before I rezz a new hive and get a few fairies around the place. I'm not sure they are suitable for this island - so they are on probation. I will judge any comments and act accordingly. But I hope they survive!

Work wise - The freebie goodies booths are now complete, they look great along the sides of the avenue. It's a bit sterile down there, so I'm considering some options at the minute.

The Pod Tour was redone. Thought it easier to do that than try and change the bits that went through the buildings. Lots of numbers here, there and everywhere in the scripting, took four hours to redo and it's no way complete now but some tinkering will sort it. No wonder I need fairy dust...

Fun Fun Fun

I have spent a lot of the last few days immersing myself into Second Life - out of the education field. The bars, the clubs, the malls. In only a few days the world can change so quickly and can almost be unrecognisable in places.

Time and time again, as I came across new objects, places etc I thought "fun" "fun" "fun"; this fun element must not be lost when dealing with education. Even in this virtual world where anything can happen, the education sector can bring into it a lot of the staid baggage from real life. The funny thing is, the people that are bringing this in are the first to want a flying spaceship or a purple dragon to follow them around.

A balance needs to be made between people feeling comfortable and familiar with their virtual environment and to use the potential of Second Life to extend the imagination, provide a fun stimulating environment and encourage people to learn, explore and understand the huge benefits of Second Life for learners.

Clocks (by Johan Laurasia)are now the right size and city names can be read fine.

A bit disappointed that as I visited my ad around SL, some of them were yellow and had script errors. A quick reset sorted them out - but all the same...

Clocks, Ads and leashes!

It was two days ago when I bought the ad signs and I have spent hours trying to get them sorted. I thought it was me failing miserably, not understanding simple instructions. I have to get Simba Fuhr (creator of Adverbs Pro 2007 - the ad system) to come help me out. Turns out eventually to be a faulty thing with SL and the server for the boards. So, never despair, it probably is not you that's doing it wrong...

The the first set of boards are now around the world of Second life. ALl being controlled by a central server in my office. As easy as pie, I can change the textures on the boards - great system!

I've had a busy day with communication today. Lots of creators to contact about customising their goods. So many people will to make sure their customers are happy, it lifts me so. Why is Real Llife not like this? Smile. I will put a board up somewhere of star creators - their enthusiasm and charm for Second life just bowls me and they should be credited.

Clocks are too big I think and cities need making bigger. But...I do have permission to use the world map. Teacher leash now customised gives me a message I am happier with.

And I've had a general clear outof the office. Oh dear! Only been here 4 days!

Ad boards

Hmmm bought some ad boards yesterday which seem great - very effective. I can put a texture in the server and it changes all the ad boards around SL. Not new or clever but design is nice and it works fine with the textures. I then put a notecard in and problems happend. When touched the ads gave out textures. And by following the instructions, just couldnt get it to not do that. I called the creator who came aover and told me the Slexchange had given me old version of the ad board. He gave me new version, but as yet not had real chance to play with it and test it.

Been generally a lazy today - spent at the beach - RL beach that it. Got to catch these nice days when they arrive; never know how many months it will be til the next one!
